How to Watch IPTV on an LG Smart TV (webOS)
LG TVs run webOS, so IPTV works through players from the LG app store. How to install one, activate it, add your playlist and keep it running smoothly.

LG smart TVs run webOS, LG’s own operating system. Like Samsung’s Tizen, it can’t install Android apps, so watching IPTV on an LG smart TV means using a player built for webOS. Most of those players are activated with a code shown on the TV and set up through the developer’s website.
How IPTV players work on LG TVs
- Install a player from LG’s app store (called LG Content Store on older TVs and Apps on recent ones).
- Open it; it shows a device ID or MAC address.
- Add your playlist on the developer’s website using that ID.
- Reload the app on the TV.
Expect a free trial followed, on many apps, by a one-time activation fee per TV. Choice varies by country and model year. If you’re comparing platforms before buying a TV, see Tizen vs webOS.
Step 1: Install a webOS IPTV player
- Press the Home button and open the app store.
- Use Search and type “IPTV”.
- Check each app’s description for your login type (M3U, Xtream Codes or both) and its activation terms.
- Choose Install, then Launch.
The Magic Remote pointer makes browsing easy: point at the screen and click, and use the scroll wheel in long lists.
Step 2: Write down the device ID
The app shows a device ID, MAC address or QR code. Note it or scan it with your phone.
Step 3: Add your playlist online
- On a phone or computer, type the website address shown in the app.
- Enter the device ID.
- Add your M3U link or Xtream Codes login, plus the EPG link if requested.
- Save, then reload the app on the TV.
Step 4: Check the TV’s settings
- Network: in the TV’s network settings, use Ethernet if possible, or the 5 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- Quick Start+: this keeps the TV in a fast-start standby. It’s convenient, but if an app misbehaves, turn it off or unplug the TV for a minute to restart everything cleanly.
- Picture: choose Cinema or Filmmaker Mode for films, and lower TruMotion if motion looks unnaturally smooth. For sport, a low TruMotion setting can help.
- Sound: if a soundbar is silent on some channels, set Digital Sound Output to PCM to test.
- Updates: turn on automatic software updates (under Support or General → About This TV, depending on the model).
Fixing common LG TV problems
| Problem | Try |
|---|---|
| Playlist won’t load | Recheck the link or login on the developer’s website, then reload |
| Buffering | Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi; restart the router and TV |
| Guide empty or wrong times | Add the EPG link; check the app’s time-zone setting |
| App freezes after standby | Turn off Quick Start+ or unplug the TV for 60 seconds |
| TV menus slow | Close other apps; see our guide to fixing a slow smart TV |
If the whole TV feels sluggish, not just the IPTV app, our guide to fixing a slow smart TV covers storage, updates and settings.
Which LG TVs work best for IPTV?
Recent LG TVs with current webOS versions get the widest choice of apps and handle large channel lists more smoothly. You can find your model and software version in the TV’s Support or About This TV menu. On older models, try a player’s free trial first and check that channel changes and the guide feel responsive before paying any activation fee.
A worked example
Suppose your provider sent an M3U playlist link and a separate EPG link:
- You open the LG app store, search for “IPTV” and install a player that supports M3U.
- The player shows a device ID and a website address.
- On your laptop you open the website, enter the device ID, paste the M3U link and the EPG link, and save.
- On the TV you reload the app. Channel groups appear and, after a few minutes, the guide fills in.
- Programmes show an hour early, so you adjust the time zone or EPG offset in the player’s settings.
Copying and pasting links on a computer avoids almost all typing mistakes, which is the most common reason a first setup fails.
LG vs Samsung for IPTV
Both platforms work the same way — device-ID activation through a website — and both have a smaller choice of players than Android TV. Our guide to IPTV on a Samsung smart TV covers the Tizen version of these steps. If neither TV’s apps suit you, an Android-based stick plugged into an HDMI port opens up the full range of players; see IPTV on Android TV and Google TV for that setup.
Stay safe
- Enter your login only on the official website of the app you installed.
- Be wary of “activation” offers received by message or email.
- Keep webOS updated.
The bottom line
On an LG TV, IPTV runs through webOS players activated with the TV’s device ID. Recent models handle it well; on older or slower TVs, a streaming stick is an easy upgrade. To compare all the options, read our guide to the best device for IPTV.
Frequently asked questions
Can LG TVs run Android IPTV apps?
No. LG TVs run webOS and only install apps built for webOS from LG's app store. To use Android players, plug a Fire TV Stick or Google TV device into the TV.
Why does my LG TV keep the IPTV app open after switching off?
With Quick Start+ enabled, the TV goes into standby instead of fully shutting down, so apps resume where they were. Turning Quick Start+ off, or unplugging the TV for a minute, gives apps a clean restart.
Is LG Channels the same as an IPTV service?
LG Channels is LG's free, ad-supported channel service built into its TVs. It is delivered over the internet, but it is separate from any IPTV subscription and doesn't use your IPTV login.
Do webOS IPTV players cost money?
Many offer a free trial and then a one-time activation fee per TV, paid to the app developer. Check the app's description before installing.
