IPTV EPG Not Working? How to Fix an Empty or Wrong TV Guide
Empty guide, 'no information' on some channels, programmes an hour out, or a guide that never updates — the causes and fixes for every common EPG problem.
The TV guide is the first thing you notice when it breaks: rows of “No information”, programmes that don’t match what’s on screen, or a guide stuck on yesterday. When the IPTV EPG is not working, the cause is almost always one of five things — and each has a quick fix.
If you’re setting up a guide for the first time, start with our IPTV EPG guide. For playback problems beyond the guide, see IPTV not working?.
Find your symptom
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Jump to |
|---|---|---|
| Whole guide empty | No EPG source, or it hasn’t downloaded | Fix 1 |
| Some channels empty | Channel IDs don’t match the guide | Fix 2 |
| Programmes an hour early or late | Time zone / offset | Fix 3 |
| Guide stuck on old days | Not updating | Fix 4 |
| Wrong programmes on a channel | Mismatched channel | Fix 2 |
| Guide slow or crashes the app | Too much guide data | Fix 5 |
Fix 1: The whole guide is empty
- Check an EPG source exists. With an M3U playlist, many players need the separate XMLTV link from your provider. With Xtream Codes it usually loads automatically.
- Update the EPG manually from the player’s settings.
- Wait. The first download can take several minutes. Don’t restart the app halfway through.
- Check the link. If the guide still won’t load, the EPG link may have changed. Ask your provider for the current one.
- Check storage. Small sticks with nearly full storage can fail to save a large guide. Free up space and update again.
Fix 2: Some channels show “No information”
Guide data is matched to channels by an ID (tvg-id in M3U playlists) or by name. When they don’t match, the channel stays empty.
- Use manual matching if your player offers it: choose the channel, then pick the correct guide entry.
- Check whether guide data exists for that channel. Providers don’t always supply guide data for every channel, especially smaller or temporary ones.
- Look for duplicates such as “Channel HD” and “Channel FHD” — sometimes only one version is matched.
If the guide shows the wrong programmes on a channel, it’s matched to the wrong entry. Rematch it manually.
Fix 3: Programmes are an hour (or more) out
Guide times include a time-zone offset. When the player and the guide disagree — often right after daylight-saving time changes — every programme shifts.
- Make sure the device’s date, time and time zone are set automatically.
- In the player, adjust the EPG time shift (or offset) by the difference, for example +1 or −1 hour.
- If only one EPG source is out, apply the shift to that source alone.
Fix 4: The guide doesn’t update
- Turn on automatic EPG updates — at start-up or daily.
- Update manually once to check the source still works.
- Clear the EPG data (or the app cache on Android-based devices) and update again if the guide is stuck on old data.
- Check the guide’s days to keep setting — if it’s very low, upcoming days may not appear.
Fix 5: The guide is slow or crashes the app
Large guides use a lot of memory, especially with thousands of channels.
- Hide channel groups you never watch; many players then skip their guide data. Our guide to organising IPTV channels shows how.
- Reduce the number of days of guide data kept.
- Restart the device to free memory.
- On very small sticks, consider a device with more memory; our guide to M3U playlists explains why large playlists are heavy to load.
Test the EPG link itself
If you’re unsure whether the guide link works, test it outside the player:
- Open the link in a web browser on a computer.
- A working link either downloads a file (often ending in
.xmlor.xml.gz) or shows a long page of structured text with channel and programme entries. - An error page, a login page or nothing at all means the link is wrong or no longer valid.
Don’t share the link while testing — it may contain your account details.
Check the guide on a second device
Add the same guide link to a player on another device. If the guide works there, the problem lies with the first device — storage, memory, the app’s cache or its time settings. If it fails on both, the link or the provider’s guide data is the issue.
Quick checklist
- Is there an EPG source? → Add the XMLTV link.
- Did it finish downloading? → Update and wait.
- Are only some channels empty? → Match manually.
- Is everything an hour out? → Set the time shift; check the device clock.
- Is it stuck on old data? → Clear EPG data and update.
- Is it slow? → Hide groups and keep fewer days.
When it’s the provider
If the EPG link returns an error in every player, or guide data is missing for most channels on every device, the problem is on the provider’s side. Contact them with:
- the player and device you use,
- which channels are affected,
- whether the problem is “empty”, “wrong programmes” or “wrong times”.
The bottom line
An empty or wrong IPTV guide is almost always a missing source, an unfinished download, a channel-matching gap or a time-zone offset. Work through the fixes in order — source, update, matching, time shift, then performance — and most guides are back to normal in a few minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my EPG show 'no information'?
Either the guide hasn't downloaded, or the channel isn't matched to a guide entry. Update the EPG first; if only some channels stay empty, match them manually or check whether your provider supplies guide data for them.
Why is my TV guide an hour behind?
The player and the guide disagree about time zones, often after a daylight-saving change. Adjust the EPG time shift and make sure the device's date, time and time zone are set automatically.
How long does an EPG take to load?
From a few seconds to several minutes, depending on the number of channels and days of data. Large guides on small streaming sticks take longest.
Should I clear the EPG cache?
If the guide shows stale or corrupted data after an update, clearing the EPG data and updating again often fixes it. It's a safe step — the guide simply downloads fresh.
