Xtream Codes vs M3U: Which IPTV Login Should You Use?
Your provider may offer an Xtream Codes login, an M3U link, or both. How each works, what each does better, and which to pick for your player and device.
When you sign up for an IPTV service, you’re usually given one of two kinds of login: an Xtream Codes login (server, username and password) or an M3U playlist link. Many providers offer both. They lead to the same channels, but they work differently — and the right choice depends on your player and what you watch. (Other unfamiliar terms are defined in our IPTV glossary.)
The short answer
- Use Xtream Codes when your player supports it and you want films, series, catch-up and the TV guide organised automatically.
- Use M3U when your player only accepts playlists (VLC, Kodi’s PVR IPTV Simple Client and many smart TV apps), or for quick testing.
How each login works
M3U playlist
An M3U link points to one text file listing every channel and its stream address. The player downloads the whole list, then builds menus from it. Our guide to M3U playlists explains the file format in detail.
Xtream Codes login
With an Xtream Codes login, the player talks to the provider’s server through an API. Using your server address, username and password, it asks separately for:
- live channel categories and channels,
- film and series libraries,
- the TV guide,
- catch-up information where available.
Because it requests only what it needs, a large account loads faster and stays better organised.
Side-by-side comparison
| Xtream Codes | M3U playlist | |
|---|---|---|
| What you enter | Server URL, username, password | One link |
| Live channels | Yes | Yes |
| Films and series libraries | Organised automatically | Often missing or mixed into channel lists |
If films and series matter to you, see how IPTV VOD works for resume points, subtitles and audio tracks. | TV guide | Usually loads automatically | Often needs a separate EPG link | | Catch-up | Supported by many players | Possible, but needs extra playlist attributes | | Loading large accounts | Faster | Slower — one big file | | Player support | Most dedicated IPTV players | Almost every player, including VLC and Kodi | | Account info (expiry date, connections) | Often shown in the app | Not shown |
Which should you choose?
You use TiviMate, IPTV Smarters, OTT Navigator or a similar player. Choose Xtream Codes. Films and series appear in their own sections, the guide is linked automatically, and the app can show your account’s expiry date. See our setup guides for IPTV Smarters and TiviMate.
You use VLC, Kodi or a smart TV app that asks for a playlist link. Choose M3U. Add the separate EPG link if your provider gives one.
You want to test whether your service works. M3U in VLC on a wired computer is the quickest test.
You want one setup across many different apps. M3U is the most universally accepted.
Entering an Xtream Codes login correctly
Most failed logins come down to formatting:
- Server URL: copy it exactly, including
http://orhttps://. - Port: include the number after the colon, such as
:8080, if your provider gave one. - No extra paths: don’t add
/get.phpor similar unless your provider tells you to. - Username and password: case-sensitive, with no spaces before or after.
Security: both are passwords
An M3U link often contains your username and password inside it, and an Xtream Codes login is your username and password. Treat both the same way:
- Don’t share them or post screenshots showing them.
- Don’t paste them into websites you reached through an advert or message.
- If you think they’ve been exposed, ask your provider to change your password.
What the account screen tells you
One practical advantage of Xtream Codes logins is that many players show an account information screen. Typical details include:
- Status — whether the account is active.
- Expiry date — when the current plan ends.
- Active connections — how many streams are playing right now.
- Maximum connections — how many your plan allows at once.
When a channel suddenly won’t play, this screen answers two common questions instantly: has the plan expired, and is another device already using the allowed connections? M3U links don’t provide this information, so you’d need to check with your provider instead.
Common questions when switching
Will my favourites carry over? Usually not; most players store favourites per playlist. Note them before switching.
Can I add both to the same player? Many players allow several playlists or users, but you’ll see duplicate channels. Use one login type per player for a cleaner setup.
Do I need a different EPG link? With Xtream Codes, the guide normally comes through the login. With M3U, you may need the separate XMLTV link.
A practical example
Imagine you watch on a Fire TV Stick in the living room and occasionally on a laptop:
- On the Fire TV, you add the Xtream Codes login to your player. Live channels, films, series and the guide appear in separate sections, and the app shows when your account renews.
- On the laptop, you open the M3U link in VLC when you just want a quick look at one channel.
Both use the same account, so remember the connection limit: two streams at once need a plan that allows two screens.
The bottom line
Xtream Codes and M3U lead to the same service. Xtream Codes is better organised and faster for large accounts in players that support it; M3U is universal and ideal for testing. Use Xtream Codes where you can, keep the M3U link for VLC, Kodi and simpler apps, and protect both like passwords.
Frequently asked questions
Is Xtream Codes a provider?
No. In everyday use, Xtream Codes refers to a login format — server address, username and password — that many IPTV players support. The name originally came from server software of the same name. It isn't a TV service on its own.
Can I convert an Xtream Codes login into an M3U link?
Many providers that use Xtream Codes can also give you an M3U link for the same account. Ask your provider rather than building one yourself, so you get the correct format and options.
Which login is faster?
Xtream Codes usually loads large accounts faster, because the player requests categories, channels and on-demand content separately instead of downloading one huge list.
Is it safe to enter my Xtream Codes login in any app?
Only enter it in players installed from an official app store or the developer's own website. A fake or modified app could send your login details elsewhere, letting others use your account.
Do both logins count against my connection limit?
Yes. However you log in, each stream you play uses one of the connections allowed by your plan.
